NABC Names Top NAIA Award Winners

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – The National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) announced today that Chris Coffey of Georgetown (Ky.) College and Kyle Mangas of Indiana Wesleyan University have been selected as the 2020 NABC/NAIA Players of the Year powered by ShotTracker while Holy Cross College (Ind.) head coach Mike McBride and Austin Johnson of Lewis-Clark State College (Idaho) earned honors as the 2020 NABC/NAIA Coaches of the Year presented by Wilson.

Coffey powered Georgetown to a 30-2 won-lost record this season and the Tigers earned the top rank in the final NAIA Division I poll.  The 6-7 senior forward from Louisville connected on 64 percent of his field goal attempts with 407 rebounds, 38 assists and 31 blocked shots for Coach Chris Briggs’ Tigers.

Only a junior and already a three-time first-team All-America selection, Mangas helped his team to a 29-4 won-lost record and IWU finished the season ranked second nationally in NAIA Division II. The 6-4 junior guard from Warsaw, Ind., averaged 26.9 points per game to rank third overall and has scored 2,379 points in three seasons. Mangas ranked second in total scoring (860 pts), and fourth in blocked shots (87).

In his second season, Johnson led Lewis-Clark State to their best season in school history with an overall record of 29-3 (.906). LC State won the Frontier Conference regular season outright before taking the conference tournament championship for the second-straight year. The Warriors, ranked No. 6 overall in NAIA Division I, were statistically one of the best teams in the nation. LC State ranked second in NAIA DI in 3-pointers made per game (11.38), total 3-pointers made (364), assist/turnover ratio (1.54) and 3-point field goal percentage (.428). The Warriors were third in field goal percentage defense (.398), scoring margin (21.25) and scoring defense per game (64.0).

McBride, in his seventh season at Holy Cross, guided the Saints to a 27-6 overall won-lost record with a 20-2 mark in the Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference. It took just one season with McBride at the helm for the Saints to have their first 20-win season and he has built his team for sustained success. Holy Cross also produced its first NAIA All-American as senior forward Larenzo Moore earned third team NABC/NAIA honors this season.
