INDIANAPOLIS – The NCAA named Jim Haney the first NCAA Division III men’s basketball national coordinator of officials. Haney has over 30 years of experience as a college basketball official, and seven years as a supervisor of officials at the conference level.

“We are so pleased that Division III has prioritized having a national coordinator for men’s basketball,” said J.D. Collins, the NCAA men’s basketball national coordinator of officials. “Jim brings with him a wealth of officiating and coordinating experience, and he will do an outstanding job of delivering a consistent message to all Division III constituents. Jim’s communications skills will truly enhance Division III officiating both in the regular season as well as during the NCAA Division III tournament.”

In his role as the Division III men’s basketball national coordinator, Haney will be responsible for working with Division III conference coordinators of officials to ensure the most consistent and effective teaching and communication methods. The goal of this collaborative effort is to identify, select and advance a diverse pool of officials for the Division III national tournament and to assist in the training, education and retention of Division III officials across the country.

Tim Fitzpatrick, director of athletics at U.S. Coast Guard Academy and chair of the NCAA Division III Men’s Basketball Committee, served as the chair of the search committee.

“The selection of Jim Haney to serve as the national coordinator of officials for Division III men’s basketball represents a significant step forward,” Fitzpatrick said. “During the interview process, Jim emerged from a very strong field of candidates as a clear choice for this position. I have every confidence that he will work tirelessly to elevate men’s basketball officiating in Division III to a new level of expertise and competency.”

Haney, who will begin serving in this new roll immediately, added, “I am very excited about the opportunity that’s been presented to me, but also aware of the tremendous challenge ahead to get a performance based system in place.”
