NABC, NCAA to Continue Collaborating on Selection Process

The NCAA Division I Men's Basketball Committee has responded to a series of recommendations by the NABC Ad Hoc Group on NCAA Selections, Seeding and Bracketing.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (July 18, 2016) – A little more than a month ago, the National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) formed an ad hoc group to offer a coaching perspective to the NCAA Division I Men’s Basketball Committee regarding the selection, seeding and bracketing process for the Division I Men’s Basketball Championship.

On Monday, the NCAA announced that the Division I Men’s Basketball Committee either adopted, reaffirmed, or agreed to study further each of the ad hoc group’s recommendations at its recent summer meeting.

The ad hoc group convened three times over the summer prior to submitting recommendations to the NCAA. NABC Executive Director Jim Haney and former SEC Commissioner Mike Slive serve as co-chairs of the ad hoc group.

“The NABC is extremely pleased with the NCAA Division I Men’s Basketball Committee’s commitment to either adopt, reaffirm or agree to study further each recommendation that was put forward by the NABC Ad Hoc Group on Selections, Seeding and Bracketing this summer,” said Haney. “We look forward to continued collaboration between the NCAA Division I Men’s Basketball Committee and the NABC, and believe our collective efforts will serve the student-athletes’, coaches’ and the championship’s best interests in the future.”

“The careful and thoughtful recommendations made by the coaches have been reflected by the willingness of the NCAA Division I Men’s Basketball Committee to seriously consider the recommendations over the next several months,” added Slive. “It’s a credit to the coaches and the committee that they are willing to work collaboratively in the best interest of the tournament.”

“The ad hoc group includes great and experienced coaches from across the country, former members of the Men’s Basketball Committee and NABC administrators who offer valuable input,” said NCAA vice president of men’s basketball Dan Gavitt in a NCAA press release. “The discussions are ongoing and the basketball committee is committed to working together with the NABC group to improve every phase of the selection, seeding and bracketing process.”
